Camel hike, and enchanting crossing in Tuareg lands

Djanet – El Akif – 3-hour walk

We start our camel trek across a majestic stone plateau whose cracks bear witness to centuries of erosion. These reliefs offer us a panoramic view of the dunes of In Aramas. The first rays of sunlight pass through the cracks in the rocks, illuminating the landscape in golden hues and encouraging us to explore the desert with respect and admiration.

El Akif – Taloudtedjart – 5-6 hour walk

As we make our way along, we come across some real geological wonders: natural cirques and small passes that reveal some breathtaking scenery. After taking the time to rest and recharge our batteries, we resume our walk in the middle of the afternoon, when the temperatures start to drop. The camels seem to enjoy this break too. Our surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful, with expanses of mineral in ochre and red hues.

Taloudtedjart – Tilliline – 5-hour walk

Following the natural paths, which sometimes resemble labyrinths, we venture into the middle of a succession of magnificent dunes. At the end of the morning, we return to our bivouac for lunch before setting off on foot to explore the surrounding area. The last light of the day creates an enchanting atmosphere, illuminating the landscape in warm, sparkling hues. It’s then that we make an unexpected discovery: nestling in the heart of a canyon, a guelta reveals its hidden beauty. This mineral oasis, bordered by steep rock faces, offers a striking contrast to the austerity of the surrounding desert.

Tilliline – Tadatneidi – 5-6 hour walk

At dawn, we begin our walk through a landscape where the dunes undulate harmoniously alongside the rock formations. In the middle of the afternoon, we embark on an exciting excursion to discover gorges and then cross the magnificent Tuya canyon. Our journey also takes us to explore the picturesque cirques that dot our route.

Tadatneidi – 5-6 hour walk

We set off on a hike through sandstone arches and explore a site where ancient cave paintings bear witness to the presence of humans in these lands for thousands of years. We take time to admire these relics of history, before making our way back to our bivouac, where we are lucky enough to enjoy the enchanting spectacle of the sunset over the desert, adding a magical touch to our day’s adventure.

Tadatneidi – Essendilène – 5-6 hour walk

We head for Essendilène to discover this famous site. We reach this legendary oasis after a journey across a vast rocky plateau.

Essendilène – Djanet – 3-hour walk

A hike among the oleanders awaits you for a unique sensory experience, where nature unfurls its charm through a palette of vibrant colours and the intoxicating scent of these flowering shrubs. The path opens out before us through tunnels of oleander, creating enchanted alcoves where time seems to stand still. On the horizon, the rock faces rise and fall to form an impressive canyon as far as the emerald guelta.
After lunch, our 4×4 vehicles meet us, ready to take us back to Djanet. We reach the Tegharghart site to admire one of the most emblematic engravings in the Tassili n’Ajjer: the “crying cow”, dating back over 7,000 years. Tuareg and scientists consider this engraving to be a masterpiece of Neolithic sculpture, thanks to its carving, its realism and the emotion it conveys. We set off for Djanet, the cradle of Tuareg culture. We visit the old town and the local market, where Tuareg handicrafts come to life. Shimmering fabrics, jewellery and handicrafts evoke the cultural richness of the region and bear witness to Tuareg art and know-how. A chance to shower before departure, then we set up our last camp in the desert close to the airport.
